Google launched new Pixel 8 smartphones, the Pixel Watch 2 and new colours for Pixel Buds Pro at its “Made by Google” event. During this event, the tech giant also announced that it will also start rolling out several new Pixel features. This includes the dual-screen interpreter mode on the company’s first foldable smartphone, the Pixel Fold. The feature will be available only for Pixel Fold users which is available in markets outside India.
How this exclusive feature works on Pixel Fold
The upgraded translation feature which was shown by Google, uses the phone’s folding display to translate both sides of a live conversation. Dual-screen interpreter mode uses the Pixel Fold’s inner and outer screens. This feature allows two people who speak different languages to speak face to face. The smartphone can translate and show the other person’s words on the user’s screen in real time.
For this a Pixel Fold owner has to hold the device’s outer screen in front of the other speaker and view their live-translated text on the inner screen. Meanwhile, the other person will be able to see the Pixel owner’s spoken words translated on the outer display.
How will it help users
Non-folding phones also offer translation options for viewing both sides of a conversation on the same display with services like Google Translate and Apple Translate. However, a dual-screen interpreter will remove the need of giving the smartphone back and forth. This will happen when both speakers have to share a single screen. This is one of the functions which will be available on foldable phones and can’t be integrated into traditional single-screen devices.
New camera interface for older Pixel models
Apart from this new interpreter, Google will also roll out other Pixel updates, including a new camera interface. In a statement provided to Engadget, the company said that Pixel’s new camera interface will make “navigating photo and video features a breeze”.
In addition, Android 14 is also adding a new clock and wallpaper collections along with the ability to customise lock screen quick actions. Google is also adding new monochromatic themes to use with Google apps via Material You’s wallpaper-matching dynamic colour system.
These updates will roll out to the Pixel Tablet and older Pixel phone models which include — Pixel 5, Pixel 5a and Pixel 4a. More recent devices like the Pixel 7 series, Pixel 6 series and Pixel Fold may have to wait as Google said that the updates for these phones will arrive “over the next few weeks.”
