From app icon to RCS enablement, Google’s default messaging app for Android phones has gone through multiple changes lately. The tech giant introduced voice messages transcription in the Messages app with Google’s latest flagship Pixel 7 and 7 Pro smartphones. The feature was later added to older models of the company’s Pixel smartphone lineup and other Android devices as well.
According to a report by 9to5Google, Google is now testing an improved voice message creation experience for Pixel users. The company is now reportedly developing a new design for the voice recorder UI in the Messages app. The report doesn’t reveal when Google is planning to launch this redesign of the voice messages experience for all Android users

Google Messages redesigned voice recorder UI: How it may work
Android users have to record a voice message from the microphone icon in the message typing bar. Currently, users have to hold down the icon until they’re finished with the entire message. The duration of the message is noted at the left of the bar. However, users can “Slide to cancel” at any time. Doing this, the enter message is cancelled. Once users are done, the message is placed in the text field which they can listen to and delete. Meanwhile, in the expected redesign (which testers were able to enable) users have to tap a new circular icon to start recording their voice messages.
The new UI will also show a waveform preview beneath the time elapsed indicator which includes pulsating dots. With this redesigned UI, once users hit the stop button, they will be able to play the recorded message. This control will also have the “Restart” and “Done” options.
Google Messages redesigned voice recorder UI: Importance
This change can be a useful one as it will differentiate the voice recording icon from the Gboard microphone icon which is also placed nearby. This new Google Messages voice recorder is also likely to look better with improved touches and animations. The upcoming design will not only conform to the Dynamic Colour feature but will also offer a similar experience which is also offered by the Pixel’s default Recorder app.
